The campus building for the new Newmains and St Brigid’s Primary Schools for North Lanarkshire Council is principally single storey timber kit design with a scale which caters for small children. It features a double height shared space within the heart of the building, where the two schools come together.
This central space benefits from natural light by means of a glazed lantern which provides an exceptional environment for several shared activity spaces. The school building has a total GIFA of 4,787m2.
The building foundations and substructure is formed on a concrete raft slab on strip foundations with mass fill to bearing strata in some areas. The structural frame is made up of a hybrid of structural steel frame and a structural timber panel kit. The building is clad with brickwork at ground floor level with a rainscreen cladding above, with mineral wool insulation in the cavity.
The project consisted of the construction of new facilities including; new teaching wings for Newmains Primary School and St Brigid’s Primary School; an Early Learning centre and associated break-out space; games hall, dining hall, changing facilities and administrative spaces. Externally there is a new 3G 9-a-side football pitch and extensive hard and soft playground areas, as well as associated civils works, car parking and road access.
